Doug went to Harvard, and traveled around a bit before his first theater Broadway experience. In 1915, he moved to Hollywood, California and started to work for D.W. Griffith, the three films he made that year were; “The Lamb”, “Martyrs of the Alamo”, and “Double Trouble”. The fallowing year he would star in twelve films, one called; "The Good Bad Man (1916)" he wrote himself. In 1919, he started United Artists with Mary Pickford and Charles Chaplin.
Later on in 1920, he would marry Mary Pickford. However, they divorced in 1936, and Doug married a chorus girl Edith Louise Sylvia Hawkes, as he retired from the film and theater business.
